Oil-Fear Strategies Keep Losing: Energy Sensitivity Looks Like Noise

Somewhere out there, a news ticker is flashing about Iran, Hormuz, or sanctions, and a trader is about to place a bet on energy stocks spiking. The platform's research department has been stress-testing that very reflex for the past week, and the results are blunt: the supply-fear trade has been bleeding money. Over 75 closed trades triggered by a rising count of Iran/Hormuz/sanctions headlines, a strategy returned just +12.01% while SPY buy-and-hold returned +68.30% in the same window. It trailed by 56.3 points, with a worst single trade of -10.50%. The fear premium, if it exists, is not showing up in backtests.

The GDP Growth Twist

Maybe the oil story works better when the economy is accelerating? The data says no, and actually says the opposite. Comparing XOM to SPY quarterly excess returns across the past three years reveals that in the five accelerating-growth quarters, XOM lagged SPY in four of them, averaging a −12.4% excess return. In the five decelerating quarters, it beat SPY three times, averaging +12.5%. The p-value of roughly 0.053 suggests this is close to significant, but the direction is counterintuitive. Oil stocks appear to be a hedge against slowdowns, not growth booms.

The Intraday and Beta Checks

Another classic assumption: when Brent moves more than 1%, an oil major like TTE should swing around intraday. Over the past three years, on 215 up-crude days TTE's average (high-low)/close was 3.28%, and on 218 down-crude days it was 3.33%. The gap is 0.05 percentage points and points the wrong way versus the supply-fear hypothesis; with a t-stat of -0.17 and p=0.87, this is pure noise. Similarly, TTE's daily beta to Brent is virtually identical whether unemployment is below or above 4.2%: 0.2635 in tight labor markets versus 0.2360 in slack ones. The unemployment regime does not amplify oil sensitivity.

Even the more granular finding cuts against the narrative. Diamondback Energy's (FANG) daily beta to crude drops to about 0.52 on high-USO-volume days (top quartile) versus about 0.65 on lower-volume days. A -0.13 gap with only a 2-in-100 chance of being luck is statistically meaningful — but it means that when oil trading is most frantic, FANG's connection to crude weakens, not strengthens. Then there is the refiners' version: a strategy buying VLO when Brent closes down more than 2% and VLO closes up the same day lost -9.88% over 23 trades with a 35% win rate, trailing SPY by over 78 points.

Takeaway: The Market Has Seen This Movie

The consistent message across these studies is that the energy complex's relationship to headline risk is nowhere as tight as traders assume. The supply-fear strategy loses, the GDP-growth angle flips, intraday volatility doesn't respond, and even beta depends more on trading volume than on macro conditions. This looks less like an inefficient market and more like a market that has already incorporated the region's noise into prices. The data leans toward treating oil-driven energy trades as high-variance bets with poor expected value — unless and until a genuine, measurable shift appears. For now, the numbers say the fear premium is mostly fear, and very little premium.
